“America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”
- Harry Truman
2007-2008 Schedule of Lectures - In Word and Deeds Symposia Series
Focusing on a different era of American history each year, this grant program encourages a literacy-based approach to teaching and learning American history. Teachers read scholarly nonfiction of major events, periods, and ideas in American history, engage in interactions with professional historians, travel to historic sites, and learn from a history content coach. This newly acquired knowledge enables teachers to deliver better American history instruction, resulting in improved student achievement.
The following professional learning programs are offered in each year of the grant:
- Annual keynote address from a nationally recognized historian,
- Literacy-based symposia series for teachers,
- Age-appropriate American history trade books and lesson plans ,
- Summer travel institutes to historic sites,
- Exhibitions on U. S. history themes,
- Content coach for teacher support and for program evaluation,
- History in a Box “traveling trunks” with primary source and artifact collections,
- Teaching American History website with on-line resources.
